where can I find my mind, if it has been lost in all the reflections

2023
Oil on Canvas
30 x 40 inches

‘Where can I find my mind…’ is a memento to a period of time where I sought out constructive criticism from everyone in my creative circle and applied those opinions to my process, diverging my plans entirely. I went into this piece with little to no plans, just painting directly from a photo reference of myself. After countless group critiques with my art department peers and professors, and a whole year later, I made various design choices which drastically evolved the meaning of the painting. The details I changed directed this piece toward my personal interests of surrealism without distracting with recognizable subject matter that would ultimately create a meaning I didn’t want for this work. This painting is an exploration of repetition, surrealism, hyperrealism as design attributes. Underlying themes in this work include the mundane, anxiety, and feeling out of touch with reality.
